Bio
Fred Hanson was a sturdy defender who arrived at the Junction Oval with a reputation forged in the VFA. Recruited from Footscray, where he had been a defensive fixture for four seasons, Hanson was brought in to add maturity to the Saints' backline in 1912. He proved to be an incredibly durable recruit, playing every match of the season—a rare feat for a first-year player in a struggling side. A defensive specialist who never troubled the scorers during his brief time at the elite level, he held his spot in the senior side throughout the entire year before departing the VFL scene just as abruptly as he arrived, leaving a legacy as a consistent, if short-lived, contributor to the St Kilda defence.
