Bio
Recruited from the Leopold juniors, Fred Howard was a defender who experienced a false start to his VFL career before eventually establishing himself at Melbourne. He originally broke into the league with Fitzroy in 1902 but managed just two senior appearances before dropping back to the junior ranks to refine his game. After a two-year hiatus from the top level, Howard was thrown a lifeline by the Redlegs in 1905 and seized the opportunity, becoming a regular fixture in their backline for two seasons. He proved to be a reliable, if unflashy, defensive option during his time at the MCG, playing 24 games for the club before concluding his career in the VFA with Preston.
