Bio
Recruited from the Collingwood Juniors, Fred Kay holds a distinctive place in Magpie history as a member of the club's inaugural VFL squad in 1897. A medium-sized option capable of hitting the scoreboard, he featured regularly during the league's foundation year, contributing six goals in a low-scoring era where multiple majors were rare. Despite this promising start, Kay drifted out of senior contention as Collingwood established itself as a powerhouse, spending three full seasons on the outer before earning a solitary recall for a final game against Carlton in early 1901. Unable to reclaim a permanent spot in the formidable Magpie lineup, his senior career concluded with 11 matches, and he sadly passed away in East Melbourne in 1917 at the age of just 38.
