The older brother of future Fitzroy premiership captain and coach Chris Lethbridge, Fred Lethbridge paved the way for his family’s association with the club nearly a decade before his famous sibling’s debut. Born in Collingwood but with strong family ties to the Riverina region of New South Wales, he broke into the Fitzroy lineup during the powerhouse 1904 season. Lethbridge made a promising start to his VFL career, booting a goal on debut in a massive 76-point thrashing of Melbourne at the MCG. Despite standing 179cm—a solid height for a key position player in that era—he struggled to maintain his place in a dominant side that ultimately went on to win the premiership that September. He managed just three senior appearances before falling out of contention, eventually leaving the legacy of a brief forerunner to one of the Maroons' most decorated leaders.
