Bio
Recruited from Tooronga Juniors, Fred Long was a robust ruckman whose football ambitions were significantly delayed by the Great War. An early volunteer who enlisted in 1914, he served with the 3rd Light Horse Field Ambulance before finally getting his chance at the top level with Melbourne in 1921. Long managed just a handful of senior appearances over two seasons, unable to command a permanent place in the Demons' lineup. Midway through the 1922 season, he was cleared to Hawthorn, where he continued his career in the VFA.
