Born in Nottingham, England, and recruited from the Leopold juniors, Fred Mann enjoyed a remarkably successful start to his brief VFL career. The reliable defender was immediately thrust into the heat of battle, featuring in Essendon’s back pocket during the 1901 Premiership victory over Collingwood in his debut season. He returned to the Grand Final stage in 1902, though the "Same Olds" fell short against the Magpies, before he departed Victoria after the 1903 season to forge a significant career in the WAFL with East and South Fremantle. While his time at Essendon was short, Mann established a lasting football legacy as the patriarch of a three-generation dynasty that later produced grandson Ken Mann and former Fremantle Dockers captain Peter Mann.
