Bio
The son of former Carlton and Essendon VFA footballer Fred McIntosh Sr, Fred McIntosh was a gifted all-round athlete recruited from Scotch College. He initially broke into the VFL with University, spending two seasons with the Students as a versatile follower and defender before the club withdrew from the competition at the end of 1914 due to the outbreak of war. McIntosh subsequently transferred to Essendon for the 1915 season, where he managed 14 games for the Same Olds while simultaneously preparing for military service. His promising football career was permanently ended by the Great War; after enlisting as a lieutenant in the 59th Battalion, McIntosh died of wounds sustained at Polygon Wood in Belgium in 1917, joining the solemn list of VFL players who never returned from the Western Front.
