Teams

An established scorer in the VFA before North Melbourne's elevation to the big league, Fred Metcalf was a key figure in the club's historic 1925 entry into the VFL. Standing 188cm, the tall centre half-forward immediately proved he could match it at the highest level, booting three goals and featuring in the best players during the Shinboners' debut victory over Geelong. He served as a reliable avenue to goal during those tough formative seasons, topping the club's goalkicking table in 1926 after finishing third the previous year. While his VFL career spanned just three seasons, Metcalf remains immortalised as one of the "Original Shinboners" who bridged the gap between the club's Association roots and its new life in the elite competition.
