Bio
A railway worker recruited from South Bendigo, Fred Parkinson was a versatility utility who operated primarily as a follower and forward during Essendon’s "Same Olds" era. He quickly established himself as a regular senior player, capable of explosive performances such as his seven-goal haul against Melbourne in 1908. Despite featuring in three consecutive semi-final campaigns between 1908 and 1910, Parkinson endured the heartbreak of being omitted from the Grand Final side in 1908 and departed the club prior to their back-to-back premierships in 1911 and 1912. After a season out of the league, he crossed to Collingwood for a brief five-game stint in 1912, but his career—and life—were cut short tragically the following year when he died from injuries sustained in an accident at South Yarra railway station.
