Bio
Recruited from Beechworth in country Victoria, Fred Pemberton was a towering utility whose VFL career was delayed by service in World War II. Standing 191cm—an exceptional height for the era—he made his debut for St Kilda at age 25 and was primarily used to contest the ruck or plug holes in key defence at the Junction Oval. While his time in the VFL was limited to three tough seasons, Pemberton became a true football journeyman after leaving the Saints in 1950. He moved north to compete in the Sydney AFL with Eastern Suburbs and Western Suburbs before remarkably extending his career into his late 30s with a stint at Glenelg in the SANFL, completing a rare tenure across top-level competitions in three different states.
