Bio
Born in Assam, India, to a tea-planting family before relocating to Tasmania at age five, Fred Pringle followed one of the most unique pathways to the VFL. A teenage prodigy who debuted for Cananore at just 15, his early career was interrupted by service in World War I—where he narrowly survived a bullet grazing his head in France—before a job transfer with the Federal Customs Department brought him to Melbourne in 1923. Known as "The Lion," he was a strapping ruckman and versatile key position player whose impact at Carlton was immediate, earning selection for Victoria during a brief but impressive two-season stint at Princes Park. Pringle eventually returned to the Apple Isle in 1925, cementing his status as a Tasmanian football legend by captain-coaching Cananore to three successive premierships.
