Recruited from the prestigious Scotch College football program, Fred Sayers arrived at Glenferrie Oval as a young prospect during a difficult era for the club. He broke into the senior side as a rover and small forward, utilizing his 177cm frame to create opportunities at ground level and offer a rotation option in attack. Sayers demonstrated an early eye for the goals, managing to hit the scoreboard in his debut season with the Mayblooms. However, his VFL career was ultimately short-lived, restricted to a handful of appearances across the 1933 and 1934 seasons before he departed the league, standing as one of the many brief contributors during Hawthorn’s formative years in the competition.
