Stats
Bio
Originally from Carlton Juniors, Fred Sigmont arrived at South Melbourne via a stint with Williamstown in the VFA. A defender by trade, he holds a unique place in history as a member of South's inaugural VFL side, lining up in the backline for the club's first-ever league match against Melbourne in Round 1, 1897. Though his senior playing career was brief—spanning just six games in that foundation season—Sigmont remained a fixture in the game long after hanging up the boots. He later transitioned to officiating and served as a goal umpire for 108 VFL matches, most notably waving the flags in the 1909 Grand Final where he witnessed his former club claim the premiership.
