Bio
Recruited from Elwood, Fred Stafford was a sharp rover and forward pocket who etched his name into Carlton folklore during his debut season. While he compiled a respectable 102 games over six seasons at Princes Park, his career remains defined by a single, premiership-winning involvement in the 1947 Grand Final. With the Blues trailing a powerful Essendon outfit by a point deep into time-on, Stafford roved a crumb from a boundary throw-in and snapped the winning goal with just seconds remaining, denying the Bombers a flag they had seemingly secured.
Stafford continued to serve the club as a consistent performer until the end of the 1952 season, finishing with 68 career goals. Despite his relatively short tenure at VFL level, his composure under the ultimate pressure cemented his status as a premiership hero. Following his departure from Carlton, he moved interstate to coach in Queensland, leaving behind a legacy inextricably linked to one of the most dramatic finishes in league history.
