Bio
Recruited from Sandhurst in the Bendigo Football League, Fred Swift arrived at Richmond as a versatile utility capable of playing almost anywhere on the ground. While he debuted on a half-forward flank and spent time in the centre, he eventually found his niche as a reliable, long-kicking full-back. Swift was renowned for his booming drop kicks from the goal square which could often travel as far as the centre of the MCG, turning defence into attack in an instant. His ability to read the play and provide a steadying influence made him a key pillar of the Tigers' backline throughout the 1960s.
Swift's career culminated in a fairytale finish during the 1967 season when he was appointed club captain. Leading the team to the Grand Final against Geelong, he played a decisive role in the dying moments of the match. With the Tigers clinging to a narrow lead, Swift famously took a saving mark on the goal line from a Bill Goggin kick, denying the Cats a potential match-winning score. He announced his retirement immediately after the siren, becoming the first Richmond skipper to hoist the premiership cup in 24 years and ending his playing days on the ultimate high.
