Bio
Developing through the Melbourne Thirds program from 1950, Fred Webster faced the unenviable task of breaking into Norm Smith’s emerging powerhouse lineup during the mid-1950s. He graduated to the senior list to play three games in the 1955 season, debuting with a win over Geelong, but found opportunities scarce in a squad destined for a premiership dynasty. Webster subsequently crossed to Sandringham in the VFA in 1956, where he transformed from a fringe VFL forward into a legendary centreman. His legacy was cemented as the leader of the Zebras' 1962 premiership side—famous for overcoming a 44-point deficit in the Grand Final—and he was ultimately honoured as the captain of Sandringham's Team of the Century.
