Bio
Recruited from Bacchus Marsh, Fred Wooller established himself as a versatile key position player capable of operating effectively across the forward line. Known for his strong marking hands and reliable conversion, he became a focal point of the Cats' attack during the late 1950s and early 1960s, often acting as a foil for fellow forwards while maintaining a high goal-scoring output himself. His ability to read the play and present as a target made him an integral component of the Geelong structure during a successful era for the club.
Wooller's crowning achievement came in 1963 when he captained Geelong to a premiership victory over Hawthorn. As the on-field general for coach Bob Davis, he led by example, booting three goals in the Grand Final to help secure the flag. Despite being just 26 years old and in good form, Wooller surprised many by leaving the VFL at the end of the 1964 season to accept a lucrative captain-coach position with Penguin in Tasmania, cementing his status as one of Geelong's most efficient and respected leaders.
