Recruited from Geelong College, Gareth Andrews established himself as a versatile key position player at Geelong, capable of playing forward, back, or in the ruck. Renowned for his strong overhead marking and football intelligence, he became a staple of the Cats' side for a decade, including an appearance in the classic 1967 Grand Final loss. However, his tenure at Kardinia Park ended in unusual circumstances during the 1974 season when he was involved in a rare mid-year swap that saw him move to Punt Road while Rex Hunt went the other way.

The change of scenery proved immediately successful for Andrews, who played a vital structural role in Richmond's 1974 premiership victory over North Melbourne just months after the trade. Although he retired at the end of 1975, his contribution to the game extended well beyond his playing days. Andrews was a pivotal figure in the establishment of the AFL Players' Association, advocating for player welfare during a semi-professional era, and later returned to Geelong to serve as a long-standing board member and Vice President.
