Bio
The son of South Melbourne legend and future AFL commissioner Graeme John, Gareth John arrived at the Swans as a father-son recruit from Gisborne. Standing 202cm, he immediately assumed ruck duties and showed genuine promise, leading the club in hit-outs during his debut season despite battling broken bones in his hand and foot. However, his time in the harbour city was defined by a series of severe injuries, most notably a crushed larynx sustained in a duel with Simon Madden that threatened his life, as well as persistent back issues. Offered a lifeline by North Melbourne with pick 63 in the 1993 National Draft, John managed just a single senior appearance for the Kangaroos before a dislocated shoulder forced him into retirement at the age of 22, leaving a career marked by resilience but ultimately cut short by medical setbacks.
