Recruited from St Bernard's in the local zone, Garry Foulds arrived at Windy Hill in 1974 and initially made his mark as a wingman and half-forward. During a largely lean decade for the club, he established himself as a skillful ball-winner with clean hands and excellent vision. However, it was the arrival of Kevin Sheedy in 1981 that defined the second half of his career, as the coach shifted the veteran into the defensive 50 to utilise his experience and composure behind the ball.

Reinvented as a disciplined back pocket and half-back flanker, Foulds became a pivotal figure in the Bombers' resurgence. He was not known for brute force, but rather for his supreme balance, anticipation, and ability to rebound out of defence with precision. This reliability made him an automatic selection during Essendon's golden era, playing a vital role in the back-to-back premiership triumphs of 1984 and 1985, where his cool head under pressure complemented the side's more aggressive defenders.
