Stats
Bio
Recruited from Lemnos in the Goulburn Valley, Garry Hamer was a versatile utility capable of holding down key posts as a half-forward, defender, or occasional ruckman. He established himself as a regular fixture in the Geelong lineup during the 1962 season, playing every match including the club's heart-wrenching preliminary final replay loss to Carlton. Despite featuring in the seniors during the 1963 season—including the infamous "Miracle Match" upset loss to Fitzroy—he was unable to force his way into the Grand Final side, instead claiming back-to-back premierships with the reserves in 1963 and 1964. He departed Kardinia Park at just 22 years of age to pursue a captain-coaching career with Horsham in the Wimmera Football League, eventually returning to Geelong decades later as an assistant coach and mentor.
