Bio
Recruited from Cobram, Garry Hocking established himself as the heartbeat of the Geelong midfield during a dominant but ultimately unfulfilled era for the club in terms of premiership success. Affectionately known as "Buddha," he evolved from a creative half-forward into one of the league's premier inside midfielders, renowned for his uncompromising physical approach, high pain threshold, and ability to win his own ball in heavy traffic. While he possessed the skill to hurt opposition teams on the scoreboard, it was his defensive accountability and relentless tackling that set the standard for his teammates.
A loyal one-club player, Hocking remained at Kardinia Park throughout his entire career, serving as a key pillar during the Cats' run to four Grand Final appearances between 1989 and 1995. His individual standing in the game was highlighted by four Carji Greeves Medals as the club's best and fairest and multiple All-Australian selections. He captained the club in the twilight of his career before retiring as a member of Geelong's Team of the Century, widely regarded as one of the toughest competitors of his generation.
