Teams

Recruited from Springvale, Garry Robertson arrived at the Lake Oval as a promising teenager, making his debut for South Melbourne midway through the 1971 season. Joining a Swans outfit that was struggling to find form during a lean era for the club, the young utility was thrown into the fray at just 18 years of age. While he found it difficult to secure a regular position in the senior side, Robertson showed genuine ball-winning capability, most notably in a standout performance during 1972 where he gathered a career-high 26 disposals. Despite this glimpse of potential, he was unable to maintain consistency at the elite level and struggled to break into a team often under siege in defence. His VFL career concluded after just nine games across two seasons, leaving him as a brief footnote in South Melbourne’s history during the early 1970s.
