Recruited from Clayton in Melbourne’s south-eastern suburbs, Garry Scott was a light-framed forward who earned his opportunity with South Melbourne during the club's bleak 1975 wooden spoon campaign. Standing 183cm but weighing just 71kg, he made his senior debut in Round 4 against Hawthorn at the Lake Oval but struggled to hold his spot initially, spending the middle months of the season in the reserves. He earned a recall in Round 17 and showed promise as a marking target late in the year, playing the final five matches of the season to finish with a respectable tally of seven goals from just six appearances. Despite averaging better than a goal a game in a struggling lineup, Scott’s VFL tenure was brief, with his career commencing and concluding within that solitary winter at Lakeside.
