Bio
Recruited from Imperial, Garry Wilson joined Fitzroy in 1971 and rapidly developed into one of the VFL's most skilled and courageous rovers. Affectionately known as "The Flea," Wilson was renowned for his dual-sided ball use, elite evasiveness, and ability to hit the scoreboard, tallying an impressive 452 goals largely from the midfield and half-forward line. His fearless approach to contested possession took a physical toll, leading him to don a distinctive protective helmet later in his career, which became an iconic part of his on-field image as he led the Lions' engine room during their resurgence in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
A model of consistency and loyalty, Wilson remained a one-club player throughout his 268-game tenure, serving as club captain for four seasons and frequently acting as deputy to Bernie Quinlan. His excellence was recognised internally with five best and fairest awards—a feat surpassed at Fitzroy only by Kevin Murray—and externally with multiple Victorian state selections. Wilson retired at the end of 1984 as one of the most decorated players in the club's history, eventually earning selection in Fitzroy's Team of the Century and induction into the Australian Football Hall of Fame.
