Bio
Recruited from Subiaco in the WAFL, Gary Buckenara arrived at Hawthorn in 1982 after a high-profile legal battle regarding transfer clearances that delayed his VFL debut. Once he took the field, he quickly established himself as one of the competition's premier half-forward flankers, renowned for his poise, overhead marking strength relative to his size, and lethal disposal by foot. Buckenara became a pivotal figure in Hawthorn's golden era, playing a key role in four premiership victories and earning a reputation for standing up in finals when the pressure was highest.
His career is indelibly linked to the 1987 Preliminary Final against Melbourne, where he slotted the winning goal after the siren following a 15-metre penalty paid against Jim Stynes, securing the Hawks a spot in the Grand Final. Although chronic knee injuries forced him into retirement in 1990, his impact over nine seasons was profound, resulting in his selection in the Hawthorn Team of the Century and induction into the Australian Football Hall of Fame.
