Recruited from Katamatite in the Tungamah Football League, Gary Cameron arrived at Geelong with a reputation as a prolific ball-winner after claiming the 1986 Lawless Medal. Standing at just 173cm, he operated primarily as a rover and forward pocket, relying on pace and goal sense to make an impact at VFL level. Despite his country pedigree, Cameron found it difficult to command a regular spot in a Cats lineup that was rapidly evolving into a premiership powerhouse under Malcolm Blight, often finding himself stuck behind stars like Paul Couch and Mark Bairstow. His career at Kardinia Park was defined by a tantalising near-miss in 1989; after breaking into the senior side for the final five rounds of the home-and-away season, he was unable to hold his spot for the club's legendary finals campaign against Hawthorn. Cameron eventually departed Victoria at the end of 1990 to continue his career with South Adelaide in the SANFL.
