Recruited from Frankston, Gary Colling established himself as a cornerstone of the St Kilda defence across 15 seasons. A tenacious back pocket and half-back flanker, he was renowned for his disciplined close-checking and durability rather than offensive flair, rarely missing matches during his prime. He played a pivotal role in the Saints' 1971 campaign, featuring in the Grand Final loss to Hawthorn, and remained a constant presence in the side as the club navigated the remainder of the decade.

Colling's on-field authority eventually saw him appointed club captain, a role he held from 1978 to 1980 during a transitional period for the Saints. He retired in 1982 as one of the most capped players in the club's history, having provided unwavering service through an era often bereft of team success. His commitment to St Kilda extended well beyond his playing days, later serving a long tenure on the club's board and remaining an influential figure at Moorabbin.
