Bio
Recruited from VFA side Springvale after an apprenticeship with the St Kilda Under 19s, Gary Cooke was a utility who earned a brief opportunity during a difficult era for the Melbourne Football Club. He broke into the senior side late in the 1978 season, debuting in Round 15 and retaining his place for seven of the year’s final eight matches as the Demons limped to a wooden spoon. Despite that run of games, he was delisted prior to the 1979 season and crossed the Nullarbor to join West Perth in the WAFL alongside former teammates Mick Rea and Shane Fitzsimmons. His stint in the West was short and turbulent—notable for a demotion to the supplementary list after arriving late for a reserves fixture—prompting a return to Springvale where he played out the remainder of his footballing days.
