Stats
Bio
Recruited from Melton, Gary Johnston arrived at South Melbourne ahead of the 1963 season to bolster the Swans' defensive stocks. Standing 177cm, he was a serviceable small defender who broke into the senior side as a 22-year-old, featuring prominently in his debut year with 14 appearances. While he failed to trouble the scorers in his first season, he managed to snag his solitary career goal in 1964, a year in which he added another 13 games to his tally. Playing during the prime years of club legend Bob Skilton, Johnston served as a reliable role player for the Bloods for two seasons before his VFL tenure came to a close at the end of 1964.
