Bio
Recruited from East Perth in the WAFL, Gary Malarkey arrived at Kardinia Park in 1977 and immediately established himself as the anchor of the Geelong defence. A traditional full-back in every sense, Malarkey was renowned for his disciplined, close-checking style and ability to spoil in contested situations. He played in an era dominated by high-scoring full-forwards, tasked weekly with containing the league's most dangerous goalkickers, a role he performed with a defensive purity that saw him play 172 games without kicking a single goal.
Malarkey's reliability was recognised well beyond the club, earning him All-Australian honours in 1979, 1984, and 1986. While Geelong remained competitive throughout his tenure, often featuring in finals campaigns, a premiership ultimately eluded the side during his decade-long stint. He retired at the end of the 1986 season as one of the most respected defenders in the league and was later inducted into the Geelong Football Club Hall of Fame.
