Bio
Gary Pert burst onto the scene with Fitzroy as a 17-year-old recruit from Bulleen-Templestowe, quickly establishing himself as one of the premier key defenders of the 1980s. An archetypal full-back, he was immensely strong, disciplined, and possessed a safe pair of hands that made him an elite intercept marking option. His ability to neutralise the game's most prolific goalkickers earned him All-Australian selection and the 1989 Mitchell Medal as Fitzroy's best and fairest. His standing at the Lions was ultimately cemented when he was named at full-back in their Team of the Century.
His transition away from Fitzroy occurred during a turbulent period for the club. A serious knee injury forced him to miss the entire 1991 season, during which he completed a high-profile switch to Collingwood as the Lions battled financial instability. While the knee reconstruction took the edge off his athletic peak, Pert remained a formidable defensive pillar and a distinct leader at Victoria Park. He played four seasons in black and white, offering stability and experience to the Magpies' defence before retiring in 1995 to pursue what would become a significant career in football administration.
