Bio
Recruited from local side Albion in the Footscray District Football League, Gary Steel was a small forward and rover who broke into the senior side as a teenager. Standing just 175cm, the nippy attacker made his debut for Footscray in 1972 and showed early promise by hitting the scoreboard during his limited opportunities. Despite his local pedigree and early start, Steel struggled to cement a permanent spot in the Bulldogs' lineup over the following seasons. His VFL career concluded at the end of 1973 with six games and three goals to his name before he departed the Western Oval.
