Bio
Recruited from Lalor, Gary Wallis was a smart, dual-sided rover who had to wait five years in the lower grades to crack the senior lineup. The son of former Magpie Tom Wallis, he captained the club’s Under-19s to a premiership in 1965 before bursting onto the senior stage in 1966. That debut season saw him boot 27 goals and play in the agonising Grand Final loss to St Kilda, establishing himself as a dangerous forward pocket with excellent goal sense. However, a bout of glandular fever the following year hampered his progress, and despite his obvious talent, he was controversially delisted mid-way through 1968 at just 22 years of age. Wallis briefly crossed to St Kilda before forging a successful career in the SANFL, where he won two best and fairest awards with West Adelaide.
