Bio
Recruited from Fish Creek in South Gippsland, Gary Walpole is best remembered for a fairytale start to his brief league career. Debuting as an 18-year-old in Round 4, 1982, the lightly-built utility became an instant hero at the MCG when he snapped the match-winning goal against Melbourne in a high-scoring thriller. Despite this spectacular introduction, Walpole struggled to cement a regular spot in the senior side, playing just 12 games over three seasons while battling for consistency at the top level. He eventually left Footscray to continue his career in the VFA with Werribee, later enjoying premiership success with Hoppers Crossing in the local leagues.
