Bio
Recruited from Northern United in the Bendigo Football League, Gavin Excell initially spent two seasons on Carlton's list in the early 1980s without managing to break into the senior side. He eventually found his home at Geelong, where the blonde-haired forward established himself as a dangerous target capable of explosive scoring bursts. His career reached its zenith during the high-scoring 1989 season, where he booted 63 goals to top the Cats’ goalkicking table during the home-and-away rounds, a campaign highlighted by a nine-goal haul against Hawthorn. However, his season ended in heartbreak; a loss of form saw him dropped to the reserves for the finals series, where a broken jaw sustained in the seconds definitively ruled him out of Geelong’s legendary Grand Final appearance. Excell played a final handful of games for Fitzroy in 1992 before his AFL career concluded.
