Bio
Recruited from University Blues in the amateurs after a standout sporting background at Geelong Grammar, Ainsworth quickly established himself as a smart and rugged fixture in the Cats' defence. He primarily operated as a back pocket who combined close-checking tenacity with the intelligence to read the play and peel off to support his teammates. His debut season in 1967 was a baptism of fire that saw him hold his spot all the way to the Grand Final, playing his part in the high-scoring loss to Richmond during his rookie year.
Ainsworth was an unusual footballer for his time, opting to miss the entire 1971 season to travel through Europe before returning to Kardinia Park to resume his career. His standing at the club was such that he was appointed captain for the 1973 season, a testament to his leadership qualities and reliability in the back half. He held the captaincy for a single year before retiring at the relatively young age of 28 following the 1974 season to focus on his legal career, departing as a Life Member who anchored the Geelong defence during a transitional era.
