Recruited from local club Strathmore, Geoff "Goo" Gosper was a clever and versatile flanker who overcame an uncertain start to become a fixture of the Essendon lineup. After progressing through the Under 19s, he briefly returned to his local club and even sought a clearance to Fitzroy before being persuaded to return to Windy Hill. His early senior career was defined by a struggle to hold a starting spot, frequently serving as the 19th or 20th man to plug gaps in the lineup. This period included the 1962 Premiership, where he was a reserve who watched from the bench as the Bombers triumphed. However, Gosper eventually shed the "fringe player" tag to become one of the club's most durable assets, stringing together 114 consecutive games between 1964 and 1969.

Gosper's peak came in the mid-1960s, where his consistency and utility value made him invaluable. He was one of Essendon's best players in the 1965 Premiership win, patrolling the half-forward flank and setting up play. While rarely a flashy match-winner, he was a "battler" in the best sense of the word—winning club awards for consistency and utility play. His tenure at Essendon ended on a principled note in 1970, when he was one of five senior players to strike over pay and conditions, a stand that helped catalyse the formation of the VFL Players Association. He left the VFL shortly after to captain-coach in the VFA and suburban leagues, later carving out a career as a radio commentator.
