Bio
Recruited to Hawthorn as a teenager, Geoff Howells made his senior debut in 1954 and established himself as a versatile key position player. Standing 183cm, he was primarily deployed in defence but possessed the utility value to swing forward when required, a trait he utilised during his most consistent season in 1957. That year, Howells played 19 games and booted nine goals, cementing his spot in the side that broke the club’s long-standing finals drought. He featured in both the Semi and Preliminary Finals of that historic campaign, playing a vital role in Hawthorn's rise from the cellar. His opportunities at VFL level diminished over the following seasons, and he eventually departed the club after the 1960 season, later surfacing with Sorrento in the Mornington Peninsula league.
