Honours

Recruited from Traralgon in the Latrobe Valley, Geoff Jennings was a central figure in a talented crop of country recruits that bolstered Footscray during the 1970s. A pacy and skilful rover who possessed excellent balance and dual-sided delivery, he established himself as a dangerous threat who averaged nearly a goal a game throughout his career. His debut season in 1974 was interrupted by a severe shoulder injury, but he displayed characteristic resilience to return for the club’s finals campaign later that year. Jennings combined high-speed ball movement with a tenacity that made him a favourite among the faithful at the Western Oval.

His influence extended well beyond his on-field skills, with the club entrusting him with the captaincy in 1979, making him the youngest skipper in the league at the time. Jennings justified this faith with consistent performances that earned him Victorian state selection for three consecutive years between 1977 and 1979. Despite his courage in the contest, chronic groin and ankle issues forced him into a premature retirement at the age of 28. He departed as a highly respected one-club player who had given his body to the cause, later continuing his service to Footscray as a reserves coach.
