A strongly built key defender recruited from Doncaster, Geoff MacIlwain waited until age 22 to earn his shot at the top level with Richmond. Standing 191cm, he broke into the Tigers' senior side early in the 1986 season, making two appearances against Carlton and Hawthorn before spending the remainder of the year in the reserves. He crossed to St Kilda for the 1987 season but was unable to add to his senior tally, playing exclusively in the reserves. While his VFL career was brief, MacIlwain became a genuine titan of country football after moving to Maryborough in the Ballarat Football League. He established a reputation as one of the region's premier players, winning four consecutive club best and fairest awards and claiming back-to-back Henderson Medals as the league's best player in 1990 and 1991.
