Recruited from Wesley College, Geoff Pryor wasted little time establishing himself in the VFL, slotting into Essendon’s defence during their triumphant 1965 premiership campaign. Standing 191cm, he was a tall and reliable backman capable of locking down the opposition's best forwards, famously holding his own against St Kilda legend Darrel Baldock. Pryor became a fixture of the Bombers' backline throughout the late 1960s, shifting to full-back for the club's 1968 Grand Final loss to Carlton.

While a premiership player in his debut season, Pryor’s most enduring legacy arguably lies in his off-field contributions. An intellectual footballer who studied science at the University of Melbourne, he was a central figure in the famous "Essendon strike" of 1970 and served as the inaugural president of the VFL Players' Association, fighting for better conditions in a semi-professional era. After missing the 1971 and 1972 seasons to travel overseas, Pryor returned to Windy Hill in 1973 to bring up his 100-game milestone, eventually retiring as a highly respected figure in the club's history.
