Recruited from Subiaco in the WAFL, George Young arrived at Moorabbin as a mature-age recruit and immediately established himself as a potent spearhead for St Kilda. Debuting in 1973, he quickly adapted to the physical demands of VFL football, utilising his strong marking ability and reliable set shot to become the focal point of the Saints' forward line. His recruitment proved to be a vital boost for the club as they transitioned out of their successful era under Allan Jeans, providing a consistent avenue to goal during a period where the team often struggled for midfield dominance.

Young's consistency became his hallmark, evidenced by his achievement of topping St Kilda's goalkicking table for four consecutive seasons between 1974 and 1977. While not the most flamboyant forward of his generation, his efficiency was vital for the Saints, and he averaged nearly three goals a game across his six-season tenure. He returned to Western Australia after the 1978 season, remembered by supporters as a dependable full-forward who carried the scoring burden with distinction during a lean decade for the club.
