Bio
Recruited from the Mallee town of Tempy, George Archibald was a solid follower who cut his teeth in the Melbourne reserves, where he featured in the 1939 seconds premiership. He broke into the senior side in 1941 but found it difficult to command a regular spot in the Demons' formidable wartime lineup, playing 47 games over five seasons as the club secured a hat-trick of flags. After struggling to cement his place in the seniors, Archibald requested a clearance to the VFA in July 1945, joining Williamstown—a club that had been chasing his signature for years. The move paid immediate dividends; he played the final six games of the season for the Seagulls and capped his year by starring in the ruck during their 1945 premiership victory over Port Melbourne.
