Bio
Recruited sight unseen from the WAFL, George Bailey arrived at Princes Park in 1941 as a serviceman stationed in Victoria with the RAAF. Although he immediately impressed as a dashing defender capable of holding down key posts or playing in the pocket, his VFL tenure was heavily disrupted by World War II. During his wartime service, he returned to Western Australia and highlighted his elite caliber by winning the 1945 Sandover Medal with Perth. Intent on proving himself in Victoria, Bailey endured a frustrating clearance standoff that forced him to sit out the entire 1946 season before finally rejoining the Blues. The wait proved justified in 1947 when he secured a premiership medallion, manning the back pocket in Carlton's famous one-point Grand Final victory over Essendon.
