Bio
A foundation player for St Kilda in the VFL's inaugural 1897 season, George Blake was a gifted utility whose football career was ultimately secondary to his exploits on the athletics track. Born into a prominent sporting family—his brothers Tom and Mick also played at the top level—Blake managed a stop-start tenure with the Saints, frequently stepping away from the game to maintain his standing as Australia's premier long-distance runner. He eventually crossed to Carlton for a single appearance in 1905, but his sparse tally of eight VFL games belies his elite endurance and competitive nature. Blake is best remembered as a dual-sport pioneer who represented Australasia at the 1908 London Olympics and finished sixth in the marathon at the 1906 Intercalated Games in Athens, proving his engine was built for far more than just four quarters of footy.
