Family

Recruited from Leopold alongside his older brother Harold, George Bower was a combative centreman who enjoyed a dream start to his VFL career at South Melbourne. He played a key role in the club's historic 1909 Premiership victory during his debut season, quickly establishing himself as a vital cog in the Bloods' midfield engine room. Known for his uncompromising attack on the ball, Bower’s aggression was a double-edged sword; while it intimidated opponents, it famously cost him a place in the 1912 Grand Final after he was suspended for striking Essendon star Fred Baring in the semi-final. He continued to serve the club with distinction until 1914, when he left football to enlist in the 13th Light Horse Regiment during World War I, later representing his country in the famous "Pioneer Exhibition Game" of Australian Rules football in London.
