A sturdy and quick utility with Danish heritage, George Calleson holds a unique slice of history as the first player from Preston to graduate to senior football. He made an immediate impact upon joining Collingwood in the VFA era, slotting into the 1896 Premiership side as a forward pocket who could also rotate through the ruck or patrol a wing. A foundation player for the Magpies in the inaugural 1897 VFL season, Calleson was known for his versatility and sharp goal sense, often featuring among the best afield during the club's formative matches. However, his career was cut short by a cruel run of injuries; after wrenching his knee late in 1897, he attempted a courageous comeback in the opening round of 1898, only for the joint to give way again. Despite the premature end to his playing days, he remains a significant figure in the club's successful transition from the VFA to the national competition.
