Bio
Recruited from VFA club Mordialloc, George Carey was a marking forward who earned a brief opportunity at the top level with Fitzroy in the mid-1960s. Standing 183cm, he had previously come through the Melbourne thirds and fourths system before maturing in the VFA, eventually getting his call-up to the Lions in 1966. He showed promise in front of the sticks with four goals in his five senior appearances, including a lively outing against Collingwood where he took six marks. However, his stint at Brunswick Street was short-lived, and he returned to Mordialloc the following season. Carey is perhaps best known to modern fans as the father of Stefan Carey, who played for Sydney and the Brisbane Lions in the 1990s.
