Bio
Recruited from the Olympic club in the local Sunday Amateur competition, George Caris was a robust ruck-rover who made an immediate impact at the Lake Oval. Standing 182cm, he showed significant promise in his debut 1948 season, playing 15 games and earning a Brownlow vote for a standout performance against Melbourne legend Norm Smith. However, his VFL career is largely defined by its abrupt and controversial conclusion during the 1950 season. In a Round 4 clash against Fitzroy, Caris booted the only goal of his career before being reported for kicking opponent Jack Gaffney, resulting in a severe eight-week suspension. He never played for South Melbourne again, subsequently crossing to the VFA where he became a premiership player with Port Melbourne.
